Region 5 track action under way

HYRUM — Bringing home the Region 5 track and field titles will be a tall task, but the southern schools in the league will give it a shot.

Box Elder, Roy and Bonneville made their mark on the first day of acion at the region meet at Mountain Crest High, with the Bees leading the girls standings and sitting one point behind Sky View in the boys standings.

The bulk of the meet will be held today beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Roy’s Tiler Heiney won a pair of events on Wednesday, claiming first in the shot put and javelin events. Box Elder’s Harley Earl was second in the javelin while Roy’s Jeska Bowman was third in the shot.

Box Elder’s Hanna Malone was second in the 1,600 meters while teammate Joana Starr was second in the long jump.

On the boys side, Box Elder’s Quinn Miles won the discus event, while teammate Adam Hendrickson ran second in the 3,200 meters.

Roy’s Anthony Gregory won the boys high jump, with Bonneville’s Stephen Merrill second and Box Elder’s Taylor Wilding third.

Sky View’s boys team won the region and state titles a year ago, with the Sky View girls among the top three.

The Region 1 meet got under way on Wednesday at Syracuse High, and will wrap up today at 3 p.m.

And after a handful of events, perrenial power Davis might have a battle on its hands.

The Davis girls trail Fremont by a point and sit just one point ahead of Weber after the first day of action. Fremont’s Tanish Daniels won the shot put with Davis’ Jessica Richardson second.

Davis’ Shea Martinez won the 1,600 meters, with Weber’s Karlee Deeter second.

In the long jump, Weber’s Mykah Heaton finished first with Fremont’s Morgan Smith second. In the javelin, Weber’s Madison Summers topped Davis’ Michelle Clark for first place.

In the boys chase, Davis leads Syracuse but the Titans hope the home-field advantage will carry over.

Syracuse’s Zach Watson and Jacob Zaugg went 1-2 in the pole vault, while Davis’ Brad Nye and Braden Cromar led a 1-2-3-4 sweep in the 1,600.

Fremont’s Jaz Johnston won the high ump with Davis’ Marcus Daley second. In the discus, Syracuse’s Bradley Sherman won with Davis’ Ben Bracken second.

The Region 11 championships are being held at Stansbury High School. The finals will begin at 3:30 p.m.
