December 28, 2017

Promontory, Utah is usually a quiet and empty place in the winter, but for several days during the end of December, the sky fills with steam and the valleys echo with whistles and horn blasts.

Thursday marked the start of the Winter Steam Festival at Golden Spike National Historic Site. The annual event celebrates local railroad history and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869.

The main event of the festival is the running of the historic Jupiter steam locomotive. Winter Steam Festival continues through Saturday, Dec. 30 with five demonstration runs throughout the day at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
